Year 6 hold their own Ancient Greek Olympics

At the beginning of January Swans (Year 5/6) started their new topic by preparing and holding an Ancient Greek Olympics.  They learnt about the origins of the Games, the events that were competed for and how the athletes prayed to the god Zeus for a good performance.  The children took part in a foot race where they had to wear a helmet and hold a shield, a standing long jump holding weights to help them jump further, the javelin and a chariot race where a driver had to hold hands with a team of 3 'horses'!  They had great fun and only one child was vaporised by Zeus for running outside of the track limits.  The winners of each event received a laurel wreath, and the winning team overall was Delphi, whose shield showed a design of the Greek letter Epsilon
