Science Roadshow - Years 4-6

Jay Abu, a Senior Science Technician at King Edward Upper School, along with some students from West Suffolk College put on an amazing 90 minute Science Road Show for Years 4, 5 and 6.

Mrs Masson (Science Coordinator) says...

The children were treated to an assortment of fantastic experiments covering various elements of the Science curriculum including:
  • static electricity using a Van der Graff generator and plasma ball
  • a whoosh bottle demo using large polycarbonate bottles primed with propan2ol, ethanol and methanol
  • dust explosions using cornflour and air to create a fireball
  • a demo that shows exothermic reaction (creating fire!) using concentrated sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate to ignite mineral wool soaked in alcohol with different salt minerals to create different coloured flames.
  • The children were also allowed to experiment with sound using air cannons filled with smoke.

The science show finished with some very impressive alcohol rockets and hydrogen balloons which made an enormous bang! A huge thank you to Jay and his team for providing such a fantastic afternoon!
