Science in Owls

This lesson was all about identifying the male and female parts of a flower in order to begin to understand how plants reproduce.

The children made their own flowers with a clear stigma in the middle and stamen surrounding it. These became part of their Science display.
In this lesson the children learnt how the stigma is sticky and how pollen is transferred from the stamen (anther) which is then fertilised.

They then looked at how SAFFRON is a very valuable spice we use to cook with and made a delicious saffron vegetable paella.

They learnt how to safely prepare the veg, measure the ingredients, infuse the saffron and then, finally. taste the end result. (last pics). It was delicious - more tasty than the edible flowers!
